Sweat vs. Ticks: Protections from Lyme Disease Video Watch time Under 1 minute June 27, 2024 Image Can your sweat protect you from Lyme disease? In this video, Alex Dainis explains how studies have shown that there is a specific protein, called SCBG1D2, found in sweat that might determine whether or not someone gets Lyme disease. In studies in mice, it was shown that one version of the SCBG1D2 protein inhibited growth of Borrelia burgdoferi, the bacteria that causes Lyme disease, while another version did not. Researchers are looking into how this protein could be used to prevent this debilitating disease, which can cause fatigue, fever, joint pain, rashes, and muscle weakness. In the meantime, don’t forget to perform a tick check after venturing outdoors! Topics Women in STEM Life Science Genetics Share
