Did you know you can grow plants without any soil? In this video, Museum Educator Sloane explains how hydroponic farming can reduce the resources needed to grow food. First, hydroponic farming uses nutrient-rich water instead of soil to grow plants. That water is also recycled as it is used to feed the plants, leading to no waste. Hydroponic plants are grown with LED lights, which can be adjusted to help the plants grow faster. Finally, hydroponic food can be grown locally, meaning it produces less carbon emissions through transportation. Here at the Museum of Science, we use our hydroponic farm to feed our adorable animal coworkers in the Live Animal Care Center!
