Why is Algol, also known as the “Demon Star,” associated with evil and misfortune across cultures? In this video, we explore the science and the history of this spooky phenomenon. Algol appears to change brightness in the night sky, which we now know is because it is a system of three stars orbiting each other. These stars would add to and block each other’s brightness over the course of a few days. But in the past, Algol might have been seen as suspicious, or like a winking devil, leading to its ghoulish association!
