What are rotifers? In this video, Quinten, a microhobbyist, explains how these microscopic animals live in all sorts of bodies of water, including temporary sources of water like puddles. They are thinner than a strand of hair, yet surprisingly complex, with a mouth, a digestive system, and even a brain. There are more than 2,000 species of rotifer, and they’re essential to the ecosystems they’re a part of because they recycle nutrients and act as a food source for other organisms.
