Popping Lids with Liquid Nitrogen

Why does the lid of this can keep popping off? In this video, Museum Educator Locke explains how the can is filled with liquid nitrogen. Liquid nitrogen is extremely cold at -320 degrees Fahrenheit, and so it feels intense heat from everything around it. This heat causes it to turn into a gas and expand. This expansion, combined with the limited space in the can, means the lid of the can will pop off again and again when liquid nitrogen is placed inside it!
