Could it be possible to cure cat allergies? In this video, Alex Dainis explains how scientists are using CRISPR to create cats that produce reduced amounts of the Fel d 1 protein. About 20% of people are allergic to cats, and the Fel d 1 protein, which is found in cats’ saliva and oil glands, is the cause of many of those allergies. Scientists have been able to break the gene that produces Fel d 1, which causes those cats to produce far less Fel d 1. This does not harm the cats, and greatly reduces the allergic reaction to them!
