How to see your own DNA without a microscope Video Watch time Under 1 minute April 25, 2023 Image In this experiment, Alex Dainis explains how you can see your own DNA at home. First, cheek cells are collected by swishing salt water in the mouth, then mixed with a little bit of dish detergent. The detergent breaks apart the cell membranes, releasing the DNA into the saltwater solution. Isopropyl alcohol is poured on top of the solution, causing the DNA to precipitate out of the solution and form a visible white clump. The DNA can then be extracted from the solution using a toothpick or similar tool. This experiment demonstrates how DNA can be extracted from living organisms using simple household materials.
