Cross-Breeding Apples for Rising Temperatures Video Watch time Under 1 minute November 14, 2024 Image How does climate change lead to the development of new apple varieties? In this video, Alex Dainis explains how the apple growing industry is cross-breeding new apples to be resistant to rising temperatures! For example, the Tutti apple was bred when apple growers in Catalonia noticed that their apple trees were negatively affected by shorter winters and hotter summers. They worked with an apple breeder in New Zealand to cross-breed apples to get ones that could withstand temperatures of up to 104 degrees Fahrenheit. Now, all Tutti apples come from a clone of a tree that was selected in Catalonia! Topics Climate Change Environmental Science Biology Life Science Women in STEM Share
