Concrete: The Climate Culprit You Didn't Know About Video Watch time Under 1 minute December 13, 2024 Image Did you know that cement produces 8% of global carbon dioxide emissions? Maynard Okereke explains how Sublime Systems is working to change the way we build with green cement! Cement production emits the same amount of carbon dioxide as the entire fleet of passenger cars and buses in the world. This is due to the fossil fuels needed to heat kilns of limestone and clay, as well as the carbon dioxide that limestone releases when it’s superheated. Sublime is working to replace the traditional kiln heating with electrochemistry, so that they will be able to source their electricity sustainably. They’re also sourcing calcium from minerals that do not release carbon dioxide as they break down, unlike limestone. These important steps towards sustainability can have a large impact!
