Cold Moon Returns: Full Moon Fun Facts

What makes this December’s full moon special? This year’s Cold Moon is the first full moon to return to its regular size after an incredible run of four supermoons in a row which started this summer! The name “Cold Moon” was popularized by the Farmer’s Almanac, which started publishing shortly after the American Revolution. However, December’s full moon has also been called the “Exploding Tree Moon” by the Cree and Oglala because of the tendency of tree sap to burst during the cold months!
