What came first, the chicken or the egg? Insoo Hyun, Director of the Center for Life Sciences at the Museum of Science, discusses how scientists have found a new way to answer this age-old question by studying the single-celled organism C. perkinsii. C. perkinsii is believed to be about a billion years old, older than any complex animal. And it was found to divide by forming multicellular structures, similar to animal embryos and fertilized eggs! So, something very similar to the egg appears to have been around much longer than the chicken.
