What is the significance of this year’s Hunter’s Moon? October’s full Moon is named the Hunter Moon because it represented a time when hunters would seek out deer and turkey ahead of winter. It’s also this year’s closest supermoon, occurring when the Moon is at perigee, or the closest point in its orbit to Earth. Because of this, the Hunter’s Moon will cause higher “king” tides in coastal areas, which scientists can use to study the impact of rising sea levels.
