What would you do if you were diving and had a close call with a shark? Shark Biologist at Massachusetts Division of Marine Fisheries Dr. Greg Skomal details how he came to experience just that. He describes how his team got a report of an 18-foot shark called “Curly” feeding on a whale carcass, meaning they had the opportunity to place a satellite link tag on the shark to track it. After placing the tag, Dr. Skomal decided he wanted to dive with Curly, and he successfully did so for an hour until the shark became entangled in his protective cage. In what he describes as “the most frightening 30 seconds” of his life, Curly began to rip apart the cage until she was free. Luckily, Dr. Skomal escaped unscathed, and he was left with an increased respect for these powerful creatures!
