What can a 1.2 million year-old ice core tell us about the history of Earth’s climate? In this video, we explore impacts of the recently extracted ice core that was buried under Antarctic ice. Because snow compacts into ice over time, it traps bubbles of ancient air and dust within its layers. These layers act as a time capsule that can show us what the climate looked like millions of years ago. This particular ice core is so old that it’s the size of 25 soccer fields. It may help us solve the mystery of the Mid-Pleistocene Transition, a period of time when Earth’s ice ages shifted from happening every 41,000 years to every 100,000 years for reasons scientists don’t yet understand!
