Celebrate World Quantum Day

On Sunday, April 14, the Museum of Science celebrates World Quantum Day with special programming combining quantum physics and modern dance! At 11:00 am, and 1:00 and 3:00 pm, New York City-based dance company SYREN Modern Dance will perform selected excerpts from their quantum mechanics-inspired piece, Red and Blue, Bitter and Sweet, followed by an audience Q&A session with the choreographer and quantum scientists.

Join us to explore Entanglement and the Uncertainty Principle through this innovative approach to science communication!

Science in Motion

On Thursday, April 18 at 1:00 pm, enjoy an opportunity to see parts of a new SYREN project in its early stages and to hear about the dance making process! SYREN is thrilled to begin this exploration in partnership with the Museum of Science and our Centers for Public Science Learning, with the company in residency in the Exhibit Halls Tuesday, April 16 through Thursday, April 18.

About the Project

In recent years, SYREN has immersed themselves in deep and insistent exploration of some of the biggest metaphysical questions and concepts facing humanity today, all through the artistry and physicality of the human body in motion. Now, SYREN is once again embarking on another such project, this time journeying into the complexities of consciousness.

The project seeks to embrace the innovations in artificial intelligence and neural networks that proliferate around us, while prodding at the edges of consciousness from within the human mind and body. As always, SYREN seeks to make art by embracing the era’s most pressing scientific questions with curiosity, reverence, and introspection. Through dance, they ask: How can our greatest scientific minds and our deepest artistic inquiries help us get closer to understanding what makes us human? And, how should we approach that which is not?

Of course, there are lighter considerations as well: Is a worm conscious? A dog? How does the pea tendril know to wrap itself around the fence post with the most sunlight?
