ReRooted is a multimodal virtual production providing context for the ongoing debate of natural hair and celebrating the roots of their African heritage. Take a journey with us through current beauty standards as we rethink the importance of hair as more than just a style for the Black and Latinx communities.

Yvette Modestin, a writer, poet and activist was born and raised in Colon, Panama. Ms. Modestin was named one of “30 Afro Latinas you should know.” She is Founder/Executive Director of Encuentro Diaspora Afro in Boston, MA and has been profiled by the Boston Globe as "The Uniter" for both her work in bringing the Latin American and African American community together and her activism in building a voice for the Afro Latino Community. Ms. Modestin is the Diaspora Coordinator of the Red de Mujeres Afrolatinoamericanas, Afrocaribeñas y de la Diaspora, an international network of Afro descendent women, and a board member of IBW the Institute of the Black World. Ms. Modestin is NAARC (National African American Reparations Commission) Commissioner. In 2020, Empress Modest-I was named Reparations and Pan African Ambassador for the Alianza Rastafari de Panama as well as one of the Women Winning Globally on International Women’s Day by Afrocenchix. In 2019, Ms. Modestin received the inaugural “Every Woman is an Activist” Award from March Forward Massachusetts. Ms. Modestin speaks to the acknowledgement of the historical connection of people of African descent and the importance of seeing each other as we seek our collective liberation.
Ana Masacote is an award-winning Afro-Latin dance specialist who passionately believes that through dance, we can facilitate social change within communities. She has spread the salsa bug to more than 30 countries across five continents. Ana is the founder of Dance to Power, an online Afro-Latin dance academy startup and former partner of internationally-renowned Masacote Entertainment. Through her social impact initiatives, she advocates for gender and LGBTQ inclusivity in the Afro-Latin dance scene and racial equity in the arts. She was most recently named a 2020/21 Kennedy Citizens Fellow, the 2019 YWCA Cambridge Woman of the Year, and is a 2019 WBUR Artery 25 honoree. She has received The Boston Foundation’s Live Arts Boston Grant in 2019 and 2020, and is the 2020 Next Steps for Boston Dance Recipient. She holds a bachelor's in Management Science from MIT in Cambridge.
