Community Solar System
A scale model of the solar system

The images on this page represent a scale model of the solar system. The sun, the largest object in our solar system, is displayed in the background. Please be patient as the images load, then try clicking o n each planet's image to learn a bit more! The sizes of the planets, in proportion to the sun, are as follows:

Object Scaled Diameter (inches) Actual Diameter (miles)
Sun 12 865,000
Mercury .0419 3,032
Venus .1043 7,523
Earth .1098 7,928
Mars .0582 4,222
Jupiter 1.2028 88,748
Saturn 1.0038 74,580
Uranus .4046 32,567
Neptune .3916 31,355
Pluto .029 1,554

Most solar system models show either the relative sizes of the planets - like the model here - or the relative distances of their orbits. Chances are you've never experienced a true-scale model that shows both. The Museum of Science has built just such a model in the Boston area called the Community Solar System.
