Scholarships

For School Traveling Programs

Thanks to generous support from our funders, we are able to grant scholarships for school programs to qualified applicants each year. Traveling Programs scholarships are made possible by:

William Randolph Hearst Foundation Fund
Lowell Institute
Boston 2004

Scholarships are awarded based on the following criteria and considerations:

  1. Our scholarships are intended for schools with limited access to financial support from PTA/PTOs, corporations, and cultural councils. To make the fairest assessment possible, we will look at how many enrichment programs the specific grade(s) in the application receive(s) each year, what the cost is, and what type of funding is used. If in doubt, please apply and provide us time to consider your application! We will typically respond to applications within a week. If your application is accepted, you are then free to book the program(s) requested. Please note that we do not accept scholarship applications after a reservation has already been made for the same program.

  2. Scholarships are available for programs booked September through December. Please keep in mind that our schedule fills quickly! We begin accepting applications for the new school year as early as the preceding February.

  3. Due to limited funding, scholarships are only accepted for individual schools (not school systems) in New England. Schools more than 130 miles away will need to collaborate with another school in their vicinity so that we can arrange multiple presentations to make the trip more cost effective.

  4. A scholarship request is limited to a single grade with a minimum of 40 students. In addition, the Traveling Program chosen must address a topic that the involved students will encounter as part of that year’s curriculum. Please see our Web pages to search for age range-appropriate programs, which are also linked to the relevant Framework connections.

  5. Schools must have an adequate presentation room to receive scholarship funding — typically something big like a gym or cafetorium — and the room will need to be completely reserved for the duration of our visit. Examine the space requirements on the Museum's Web page for the Traveling Program you are interested in to make certain your school has enough space.

  6. Traveling Programs are meant to be a long-term resource for teachers, and scholarships can be renewed every year that funding is available. Scholarship priority is given to established school partners, as consistent enrichment programming is most effective. Please consider how we may partner with your school and develop a long-term relationship to benefit your students.

If you have any questions regarding the scholarship process, please contact us at travelingprograms@mos.org or at 617-589-0354. It is our intention to provide as much funding as possible to those who need it most. Also, check out our upcoming Traveling Programs brochure, which will contain a new section on cost-saving options!

We will be gradually introducing a program assessment process, probably consisting of pre- and post-program tests for the relevant students. We ask scholarship recipients to participate in this simple process. The information can help us assess our programs and suggest programming topics for coming years.

To apply, download the School Program Funding Application Form. Print out the application, fill it in completely (use additional paper if needed), and either mail, fax, or email the application to:
